Indo-English Cross-Over Christian & Pop Singer
I was born in Jakarta, Indonesia on the main island of Java at the time when Dick Clark's American Band Stand featured Whitney Houstonand Gloria Estefan's Miami Sound Machine was taking off. I had no stereo system, boom box, MTV, VH1, BET TV or top ten Radio stations to listen to daily but I dreamed of being an Indonesian music star as a grew up. People told me because of my Javanese and Sundanese heritage I possessed beauty attributable only to an "island woman". That was nice, but being what seemed then like a million miles from my dream of becoming a professional pop singer, I had to figure out how to nourish my dream and did so by using my mother's cassette tape player to listen to famous singers of the 80's and practicing singing like they did. By age fourteen I was able to make my voice vibrate when singing. Then a good friend of mine who ran a music school in Jakarta gave me the chance to sing with beginning musicians and I loved it. By 1994 my pop star dream began to evolve when Steve Bagenda a popular Indonesian musician, song writer, producer and owner of A.S.A.P., a well known Jakarta music production studio, heard me sing. The next day he asked me to record the song "Satu Hati" ( One Heart ) and TV commercial song for Kelly Lemon Soap. As fate would have it I had the chance to travel to America in 1995 and met Robert Ziino, a young producer with an up-start studio in Orlando, Florida. I wrote the lyrics and melody and Robert produced the music for two songs in my native language Bahasa Indonesian. The songs, Yang Ku Ingin ( That I Need ) and Berikan Aku Cinta ( Give Me Love ) After I had a vocal audition with Prana Jaya the most in-demand voice coach in Indonesia who had trained Ruth Sahanaya and AB3 the most famous female singers of Indonesia Pop, R&B & Dance music. His comment after the audition your voice is beautiful. Then I was given a interview with SONY Indonesia but to my dismay was not signed. Wow! What a Suprise! - to me and others particularly after their super comment about my voice and demo music. Learning English was not easy as I traveled many times to the U.S. but after relocating here in 1998 I decided to record her first English language version pop song believing this could enhance my opportunities as a cross-over artist similar to the late Selena. By chance Cedar House Productions outside of Nashville, Tennessee owned by Johnny Pierce musician and three-time Grammy nominated producer herd my demo tape in Bahasa Indonesia and called within an hour to see if he could produce a song with me. I recorded Mambo Me Crazy a romantic dance tune that titillates your toes and your mood and makes you want to get up and start dancing. In September 2001 I was moved deeply by the 9/11 incident and the impact it was having on America and Indonesia and I was inspired to write and record Gotong Royong, with producer Teddy Randazzo, famed singer for little Anthony & The Imperials, song-writer and producer. It is an inspirational song about working together for unity and cooperation and was sent to Ibu Megawati, the former President of Indonesia, as a gift.
